About Acton Academy Salado

Acton Academy Salado is a learner-driven community that believes every child is capable of changing the world. We are not a traditional school. Instead of lectures, grades, and standardized teaching, we empower learners to take ownership of their education through hands-on projects, Socratic discussions, real-world challenges, and meaningful work.

Position Overview

We are seeking an Apprentice Guide who is currently studying education, child development, psychology, or a related field and feels inspired by the Acton Academy model. This role is perfect for someone who wants real-world experience in a learner-driven environment while growing as a leader, mentor, and educator.

This is not a traditional teaching position. At Acton, Guides do not lecture or manage learners through rewards and punishments. Instead, Guides ask thoughtful questions, model curiosity, maintain studio systems, and support learners as they take ownership of their journey.

Responsibilities

  • Support Guides in maintaining a calm, engaging, and learner-driven studio environment
  • Build positive relationships with learners while maintaining excellence and accountability
  • Assist with launches, projects, studio systems, and transitions
  • Encourage independence, problem-solving, and responsibility
  • Model professionalism, curiosity, and a growth mindset
  • Help prepare materials and maintain organized learning spaces
  • Supervise learners during outdoor play, studio work, and community events
  • Participate in team meetings and ongoing leadership development

Qualifications

  • Currently pursuing a degree in Education, Child Development, Psychology, or a related field
  • Passion for learner-driven education and child development
  • Alignment with Acton Academy’s mission and promises
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills
  • Self-motivated, dependable, and adaptable
  • Comfortable working collaboratively and receiving coaching
  • Experience working with children preferred but not required

What Makes Someone a Great Fit

You may be a great fit if you:

  • Believe children are capable of more than traditional systems often allow
  • Value curiosity, responsibility, and personal growth
  • Enjoy mentoring rather than directing
  • Are excited by innovative education models
  • Want hands-on experience in a meaningful educational environment

What You’ll Gain

  • Mentorship from experienced Acton Guides and leaders
  • Hands-on experience in learner-driven education
  • Leadership and communication development
  • Experience facilitating rather than teaching traditionally
  • Opportunity to grow within the Acton community

To apply, please send your resume and a short introduction sharing:

  1. Why you are interested in Acton Academy
  2. What inspires you about working with young people
  3. A book, experience, or idea that has shaped your view of education
